If your electric furnace will not come on or is not running properly, you will need to troubleshoot it to figure out what is going on. There are several things that can go wrong with a furnace. Some of these things are simple, while others can be more difficult and expensive to fix. Figuring out what is going on with your unit is imperative so that you can get it fixed quickly.
Troubleshooting Your Furnace
Here are several things that you will need to check when your furnace is not functioning properly.
• Furnace will not turn on. If your furnace does not turn on, you will first want to check the power cords and the fuse box. Make sure that you do not have a tripped switch. In addition, you will also want to check and make sure that your furnace has a new battery and is operating properly.
• Short cycling. If your furnace is turning off and on quickly, this is a condition known as short cycling. A dirty air filter generally causes short cycling. You need to change your air filter every one to three months to ensure that the airflow is good. If the filter is not the problem, it could be a problem with a blower, or there could be a problem with the thermostat’s wires.
• No heat. If there is not enough heat coming through the vents, it is a good idea to check the thermostat to ensure that it is functioning properly. If the thermostat is fine, you will need to check the air filter to see if it is dirty. If these are fine, you will need an HVAC professional to come out to check the system.
• Furnace will keep running. If your furnace runs for a long amount of time, it could be a thermostat issue. If this is not the issue, it could be a relay problem or another issue.
