The general rule of thumb is to change your AC filter every three months, but the type of filter you have can affect how often you need to change it. Some units may use thicker filters that only need to be changed every six months or so. If you have lot of pets or are allergic to pollen, you probably want to change your filters more frequently. Some people benefit from changing them every month or every other month.
- Remove debris. Removing weeds, shrubs and other overgrowth from your outdoor unit will help it run more efficiently.
- Check for leaks. Drain lines, refrigerant lines, exhaust flues, and condensate lines can all have leaks that impair operations or damage your home.
And the gentle hum of the air conditioning unit should serve as a reminder that one of the best ways to keep your HVAC running problem-free throughout the year is to get a regular tune-up.
